Florida Bill Aims to Expand Partnerships Between Broward Hospital Districts
A Florida state senator has introduced new legislation designed to allow Broward County’s two public hospital districts. Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System are to form public and private partnerships without violating antitrust laws. An identical bill has also been filed in the Florida House, signaling growing legislative support for increased collaboration between the two health systems.
The proposed bill would permit two or more hospital districts to jointly establish and control partnerships among healthcare facilities. These ventures could operate anywhere within the boundaries of participating districts. Thus, creating more flexibility for regional healthcare planning and service delivery.
The legislation would make it easier for the North Broward Hospital District and the South Broward Hospital District to work together. Both systems are currently led by CEO Shane Strum, who has stated that the proposal focuses on collaboration and efficiency.
A similar measure stalled last year after opposition from HCA Healthcare, which operates several hospitals in Broward County. Some residents and healthcare workers also expressed concern that the bill could eventually lead to consolidation. Supporters of the new proposal argue the legislation is intended to improve coordination, reduce duplication of services, and strengthen public healthcare access across Broward County.
