Raising the Bar for Care: The Gloria Drummond Patient Tower at Boca Raton Regional Hospital

The nine-story Gloria Drummond Patient Tower at Boca Raton Regional Hospital will redefine what modern healthcare facilities look like. Ultimately, this visionary expansion will feature all-private patient rooms, 20 new operating rooms (including two hybrid ORs with ceiling-mounted IMRIS), advanced imaging suites (including a hybrid MRI), and so much more! It will encompass more than 427,000 square feet of state-of-the-art medical space. Thus, expanding the hospital campus to more than 1.08 million square feet. Robins & Morton+2baptisthealth.net+2

Focused on Healing & Education

The tower will house the Michelle & Michael Hagerty Center for Graduate Medical Education, more than doubling the hospital’s existing education footprint. Furthermore, it will help attract top medical school graduates to serve the South Florida community. Robins & Morton+1

The Heart of the Facility: Central Energy Plant

The campus is also building a two-story, 39,000-square-foot central energy plant (CEP) that includes a 6,900-ton chiller plant, 10,000 kW generator plant and 23,975 MBH boiler plant. Interestingly, it is engineered to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and supply up to 21 days of backup power. Robins & Morton+1

Wellness, Sustainability & Innovation

Sustainability is central to the design. The project pursues both the globally-recognized LEED certification and WELL certification (for health & well-being in the built environment). Therefore, this makes the complex one of the first hospital-based facilities in Florida to aim for WELL. Robins & Morton+1 Life-cycle analysis (LCA) guided material choices: locally-sourced precast concrete panels reduce transportation emissions; passive shading devices reduce heat gain; building envelope strategies support energy efficiency. What It Means for the Community

  • More private rooms = enhanced comfort, privacy and infection-control for patients and families.
  • Expanded OR and ICU capacity = faster access, more timely care, and ability to serve more complex cases.
  • New education centre = stronger workforce development, more skilled caregivers in our region.
  • Resilience in extreme weather and power-outage scenarios ensures a safe haven for patients when it matters most.
  • A building designed for wellness means caregivers and patients alike benefit from an environment created for healing, not just care.

Looking Ahead

With the tower scheduled for completion soon, the Boca Raton Regional campus is re-imagining how healthcare is delivered in South Florida. From private patient rooms to advanced operating suites, from resilient infrastructure to wellness-focused design, the Gloria Drummond Patient Tower stands as a model for the future of hospital construction and patient-centric healthcare.

Stay tuned for updates as we move closer to opening day and bringing this transformative vision to life.
